An earthing cable tray, also known as an Equipment Ground Conductor (EGC), is a system that connects metal parts of a building together to create a ground network. Cable trays are often used in commercial and industrial construction as an alternative to open wiring or electrical conduit systems.
Here are some things to know about earthing and cable trays:
Ground network
The ground network is made up of all metal parts of a building, including beams, conduits, cable trays, and metal frames or devices.
Bonding
To maintain a low potential to ground, some manufacturers recommend bonding the cable tray system to the facility ground system every 50–60 feet.
Bonding jumpers
If spans are not bonded to the facility ground and exceed 60 feet, a separate EGC or bonding jumper should be installed.
Corrosion
Metal corrosion is a chemical reaction between the iron in steel and dioxygen in the air or water.
